My Little “Raisin-Head”

I had a name picked out for her before I had even met her…I knew that the next pooch I would adopt would be called “Raisin”.

Fourteen years ago, my husband and I went to the Home & Garden Show at the Dallas Convention Center…I thought I was safe. Surely this show wouldn’t have any dogs in it (as I’m a sucker for any pooch) and we almost made it out tof there…until…after 3 hours of roaming around and looking at home designs and furnishings…we turned the corner and saw the Operation Kindness booth. The trumpets sounded and everything went into slow motion for me when I laid eyes on a little puppy being held up by an Operation Kindness Volunteer. My husband looked at me and he knew that there and then, without any further discussion, we were about to become pet parents to our 4th dog. And he was right!

I named her “Raisin-Head” because she looked like a little raisin when we got her. She’s a Boston Terrier/Cairn mix and she’s brindle. As I look over at her now, as she’s sleeping in her basket of blankets, it’s hard to believe that she’s 14 years old. Her brindle coloring now has a lot of grayish white especially around her muzzle.

Raisin-Head is blind now. She can’t hear very well. She’s on medication for seizures. She sleeps a lot. She’s still my baby. She’s added so much to our lives. It’s an honor to carry her outside to potty, to care for her, to get her to the vet for check-ups and blood work. Sometimes I look at her and I’m filled with so much love that tears come to my eyes.

Raisin still get around, she loves to eat, and her quality of life still seems to be good. When she no longer seems to experience joy in her life and her quality of life begins to dwindle…I’ll hold her and see her to the end of her life and I’ll hand her over to God so that she can cross over to the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. I’ll do whatever I have to do for her comfort and well-being…because she’s my little “Raisin-Head”.
