Don’t Forget the Dew Claws!

Pet parents, come on! Let’s start assessing our pooch’s nails…front and back paws and dew claws. Dogs need their nails done often or the vein & the nerve will grow the length of the nails…and then the pooch will have a very painful situation going on when someone does try to clip the nails back. The dew claw which can be found (sometimes) on the inner and upper portion of each leg and can grow into a complete circle embedding itself into the pad (the fleshy and soft part of the toe). Owwww!

There is a proper way to clip nails and the process needs to begin as soon as the pooch becomes a part of your family. If you wait too long inbetween “pet-a-cures”, the nails will grow and, as I said before, so will the vein and the nerve. “Tipping” the nails will be the only thing you, or a professional dog groomer, will be able to do.

If the nails have grown to the point of impairing the dog’s ambulation, then a veterinarian will probably have to do it under anesthesia otherwise it will be absolutely, extremely painful for the pooch….so please don’t—don’t—cut the nails back or insist that a groomer do it.

The nails will bleed…the dog will scream…and he/she will never let anyone come near their paws again. Ask your groomer or veterinarian to show you how to clip the nails properly…I’m certain that they would be more that happy to assist you. Or, come and talk to Petite Pooch Plus’ Manager, Lorena Evans! She’s an expert at clipping nails and she will be more than happy to give you a lesson.
