With This Collar…I Thee Wed
There was a description of a dog needing a home which was posted on a network which I happen to receive email notices from…this email posting really bummed me out. It read as follows:
“Every week there is a HEARTBREAKER, and this cute guy appears to be this week’s and we thought the saddest until we also looked at Marco below. SO SAD for both of these dog. This gentle 12 year old GERMAN SHEPHERD named Jack was released to the shelter after his previous owners moved into an apartment that did not have enough room for him. He is reportedly good with other dogs and likes children, but has not been around cats.. HIS EYES ARE SO SAD … just breaks your heart …
My heart breaks everytime I read these stories and worse…I cry everytime I look at the corresponding pictures. It seems to me that when you decide to place a collar on a pet…”it is for better or worse, through sickness and health, ’til death do you part”. It is a committment…a lifetime committment. Divorcing a pet because there’s not enough room in your apartment, or because the kids went off to college, or because he/she is elderly now and is having bladder problems simply doesn’t make sense to me. Petite Pooch Plus has had it’s share of “house dogs” because of the reasons I’ve cited above. I can’t always intervene, but I try. Responsibiltiy for taking on a pet is as heavy as taking on a spouse…don’t do it if you don’t have the guts to see your pet/spouse through the tough times which include financial, health, and death. It’s not always Utopia…any great relationship takes hard work. If you don’t have what it takes to sustain a long-term relationship then don’t offer the ring and certainly, don’t offer the collar.

Hi, my name is Blu, and I just found your blog a few minutes ago (after much searching on Google to find a good dog grooming blog - that is much harder to do than I would’ve thought).
I’m interested in your blog because I’m trying to get into grooming myself, and the more insight I can get, the better. I’m very excited, and ready for the hard work. Any stories or tips you have about your field, I would love to read.
Anyway, just thought I’d tell a little about myself since I’ll be around.
I felt compelled to comment on this one entry in particular because I feel the same way. I could not imagine throwing out my dogs any more than I could picture throwing out my 7 year old son. They are part of my family, and it breaks my heart to hear that some people can do these things. And boy, am I a sucker for a lost soul… if my house were bigger, I’m certain I’d have more than two pups right now.
Well, I’m off to do some more reading.
Thank you for writing!
